2008 Vietnam Energy Efficiency Conference

TOPICS

Standards, Energy and the Environment: Green for Good
Michael Violette, Director, American Council of Independent Laboratories

International cooperation is critical for sustainability. Cooperation between Regulators, Industry and Consumers is necessary and the only certain path for success. In the same way, multiple technologies are needed to produce an overall solution to the problem. This presentation will provide an overview of the US-based efforts for energy conservation and the technologies that are being developed to develop sustainable energy and reduce the impact of energy production on the environment.

Trends in International Standards Agreements for Energy
Desmond Fraser, President, Rheintech Laboratories

Mutual Recognition Agreements represent the highest form of cooperation between government standards bodies. MRAs have been developed between the United States and Vietnam and are on the way to being implemented in the Telecom sector. Further activity in standards agreements, leading to meaningful and beneficial arrangements, are a key to supporting the development of trade and investment between international economies. This presentation will provide key information and a background on the development of these international agreements as well as potential future areas for agreements and cooperation between the US and Vietnam.

Designing Energy Efficient Buildings
Chandler von Schrader, National Manager of Home Performance, Environmental Protection Agency

The "EE" in "GREEN" is Energy Efficiency! A building cannot be considered "green" without fully addressing the energy efficiency best practices. Building regulations and the marketplace are forcing architects and engineers to design “green” buildings that deliver on the energy efficiency promise. The presentation will discuss first step strategies of moving toward green and how ENERGY STAR is leading the way in the United States. Additionally, this presentation will describe EPA’s residential efforts at promoting energy efficiency best practices to utilities, HVAC and remodeling industries. An overview of the Home Performance with Energy Star (HPwES) program will be provided. .

An Overview of Safety Standards for the US Solar Photovoltaic Industry
Janardhanan Chandrasekar (JC Sekar), General Manager for ASEAN, Underwriters Laboratories

The growth in solar PhotoVoltaics (PV) is nearly 50% in the last five years. This is an important area in the area of standards development. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has played a pioneering role in developing standards for the Solar Photovoltaic industry. As a leading testing and certification organization with cutting edge testing facilities, UL will provide an overview of the key standards that manufacturers and suppliers in the fast growing Solar PV industry should be familiar with today.

Electrical Equipment Design for Energy Efficiency
Steven Koster, EMC Operations Manager, Washington Laboratories

Energy efficiency in electrical equipment is critical for a sustainable and clean environment. Proper design of electrical equipment can reduce energy usage by 30%. This can be achieved by proper selection of power supply components, system design and construction. This presentation will provide technical issues facing an electrical equipment manufacturers and fundamentals of energy saving design. The EPA’s Energy Star program, developed to reduce electrical energy consumption for over 20,000 products, is a key element of the standards to reduce energy consumption.
